Family and Relationship Services

Knowledge and understanding of family relationship services.

A marriage celebrant must:
(a) maintain an up to date knowledge about appropriate family relationship services in the community, and
(b) inform parties about the range of information and services available to them to enhance, and sustain then throughout, their relationship.

Section 42(5A) of The Marriage Act 1961 states that an authorised celebrant will give to the parties a document in the prescribed form outlining the obligations and consequences of marriage, and indicating the availability of marriage education and counselling. These details are covered below.

Information must be provided to all clients who complete a Notice of Intended Marriage.  The information needs to be given to the clients at the time of the signing or as soon as practicable after receiving the NIM. Copies must be provided to both parties. If they are not there in person the literature can be sent to them at the postal address provided by the parties. It covers two main aspects.

One form is Form 14A of the Marriage Act 1961 which covers an explanation about relationships, marriage and services that are available for persons and couples to support them through life. The other information is a brochure identifying for persons the providers of family relationship services.
